In late June, the monsoon winds start blowing from the Indian Ocean, causing temperatures to drop and drizzle to begin. The landscape starts its magical transition to green.
During June, Salalah is ideal for travellers seeking a Khareef Transition experience. Ensure you review the pros and cons below to align with your desired vacation style.
June is the transition month to the famous Khareef. While the first half is hot, the second half brings cooling monsoon winds, light drizzle, and the initial greening of the landscape.
The weather changes dramatically mid-month. Average temperatures drop from 33°C to 28°C (82°F) as cool winds from the Indian Ocean arrive. Humidity jumps to 80%, and light drizzle begins. The ocean becomes extremely rough; swimming and boat cruises are suspended.
Watch the magic unfold. Within days of the first drizzle (usually around June 21), the dry brown mountains start to turn green. Seasonal waterfalls begin to trickle, and wadi beds start filling with water.
This is a wonderful time to witness the dramatic change in nature without the heavy crowds of July. Scenic drives along the foothills and visiting the Mughsail blowholes (which start shooting water due to high waves) are top activities.
Prices start to rise in late June. If you plan to visit during the transition phase, book by April. Many local hotels use June to prepare for the massive influx of tourists in July.
