January in Salalah features beautiful, sunny winter weather with cool ocean breezes. It is the peak season for international tourists seeking warm sunshine, with crystal-clear seas perfect for swimming and dolphin watching.
During January, Salalah is ideal for travellers seeking a Sunny Winter Season experience. Ensure you review the pros and cons below to align with your desired vacation style.
January is one of the most popular months for international travelers to visit Salalah. The weather is dry, sunny, and pleasantly warm, offering an escape from the freezing winters of Europe and North America.
In January, Salalah experiences its finest winter climate. Average daytime temperatures linger around 28°C (82°F), while the evenings drop to a refreshingly cool 19°C (66°F). Cloud cover is practically non-existent, giving you nearly 10 hours of crisp daily sunshine. The humidity sits at a highly comfortable 55%, making outdoor activities pleasant without the stickiness associated with summer.
Crucially, the sea swells are minimal during this time of year. The Indian Ocean is calm, crystal-clear, and safe for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Coastal areas like Mirbat and Taqah boast high underwater visibility, often exceeding 15 meters, making it the peak season for exploring the local coral reefs and spotting sea turtles.
If you are expecting green mountains and active waterfalls, January is not the month for you. The lush green forest canopy that defines the summer Khareef season has dried up, revealing the natural, rugged limestone geology of the Dhofar mountains. Wadis like Wadi Darbat and Ayn Athum are dry, and the cascading waterfalls have stopped.
However, the wadi pools at Darbat still hold beautiful turquoise water, and the arid landscape has its own desert charm, highlighted by the striking forms of frankincense trees against limestone cliffs.
This is the absolute best time for marine safaris. Pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins travel close to the shore, and specialized boat operators depart daily from the Salalah Marina. Stargazing and camping in the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert are also highly popular, as clear winter skies offer views of the Milky Way, and daytime desert temperatures are mild.
Historical exploration is highly comfortable in January. Walking through the UNESCO ruins of Sumhuram (Khor Rori) and Al Baleed Archaeological Park is pleasant, as you can spend hours outdoors without the intense heat of spring.
January is peak season for European charter tourists, particularly from Italy, Germany, and Poland. Beachfront resorts like Hawana Salalah (Fanar and Rotana), Crowne Plaza, and Anantara Al Baleed run at high occupancy rates. You should book your hotel and flight package at least 3 months in advance.
Prices for luxury accommodation are at their highest of the year (excluding regional Khareef demand), but budget hotel apartments in the city center remain reasonably priced, starting around 15 OMR per night.
