Ayn Khor is a breathtaking seasonal waterfall tucked away in the western hills of Salalah, featuring a cascading flow into a natural turquoise pool surrounded by dense tropical vegetation.
Ayn Khor Waterfall is one of Dhofar's best-kept secrets, located in the western mountainous region near the village of Rakhyut. During the Khareef season, heavy monsoon rains feed this spectacular waterfall, which cascades down a series of limestone terraces into a pristine natural pool. The surrounding area is blanketed in dense tropical vegetation, including wild fig trees, ferns, and towering palms, creating a jungle-like atmosphere that feels far removed from the Arabian Peninsula.
Unlike the more accessible Ayn Athum, Ayn Khor requires a bit more effort to reach, which means fewer crowds and a more peaceful experience. The pool at the base of the waterfall is crystal clear, though swimming is not recommended due to slippery rocks and occasional strong currents during peak monsoon. The walk from the nearest parking area follows a scenic trail through the forest, offering opportunities to spot local birdlife and enjoy the misty mountain air. A small local cafe operates near the trailhead during the Khareef season, serving fresh fruit juices and snacks.
Swimming is not recommended due to slippery submerged rocks and unpredictable currents during peak monsoon. It is safest to enjoy the views from the shore.
The site is accessible year-round, but the waterfall is completely dry during winter months. The area remains peaceful for hiking, but without the cascading water.
A standard sedan can reach the main parking area on the paved road. However, some of the side tracks leading to viewpoints may require a 4WD.
During the Khareef season, a few local vendors sell fresh corn, fruit juices, and snacks near the trailhead. Outside the monsoon season, there are no facilities.
